Welcome

Hello, and welcome to Calvert House, the Catholic Center at the University of Chicago!

We know that this is a difficult time to arrive on a new campus and set out on a new degree program. We are committed to doing all we can to make you feel at home in your new faith community, and we encourage you to reach out to us at any time.

Calvert House has stood at the foot of campus for more than 80 years in order to lead the University’s students, faculty, and staff deeper in Christ, and wider with the Church. This means that we offer the sacraments, spiritual formation, intellectual resources, social activities, and opportunities for service. Through these activities, you can grow in your personal faith while growing in Christian friendship and community.

During your time at the University, you have the opportunity to embrace your faith, discover your unique vocation, and prepare for lifelong leadership and service. However, this will not happen automatically. At Calvert House, we hope you will find a spiritual home that challenges you to discover and live your faith while providing all the resources needed for you to do so.

The Calvert House Community

The students, faculty, and staff who walk through the doors of Calvert House come from all walks of life: from first-year undergrads who were born and raised a Catholic to post-docs who are interested in RCIA. Our chapel is visited by world-renowned theologians and bishops, as well as non-Catholics that developed a curiosity about the Church in class. In recent years, students studying Theology might have even recognized a fellow member of the Divinity School guest-presiding Mass at Calvert House.

The diverse members of our community are united by the shared recognition that a secular campus cannot provide everything we need to live out our lives as Christians. Coming together as the Church, we seek the encounter with God that sets our course and enables us to approach our studies and our campus community with the light of Christ and the grace of the Holy Spirit.
